Joseph Phips, 1768 Brunswick County, Virginia List

A list of Brunswick County, Virginia men who were polls and voters in 1768 was published in a back issue of The Southside Virginian (see pages 109-110). The list was compiled 2 December 1768 and submitted 10 January 1769.

One of the men listed is Joseph Phips. He voted for Nathaniel Edwards, Jr. and Frederick Maclin. Interestingly, the list also contains surnames associated with the Phipps/Phripp family generally, including Reives (Reeves), Mosely (Mosley), Winfield (which appears as a Phipps given name in Brunswick County), and Tatum (which was closely associated with the Reeves family).

We’ve discussed earlier a Joseph Phipps in Brunswick County, perhaps the same one, who appears to have been the progenitor of a line as follows:

  • Generation 1: Joseph Phipps, d. abt 1809 Brunswick Co., VA
  • Generation 2: John, Mary, and Benjamin Phipps; Mary married a Woolsey, presumably Abner Woolsey with Joseph Phipps as bondsman
  • Generation 3: Benjamin Phipps (1761-1845); he married Lucy Turbyfield
  • Generation 4: Winfield Phipps (b. 1801), James N. Phipps (b. 1806), Williamson Phipps, Littleton Phipps (apparently moved to Georgia)

We’ve also discussed how this family may possibly connect to the Cabiness/Caviness family which, in turn, appears to connect Jamaica and Cape Fear in southeastern North Carolina, as evidently a part of that constantly recurring Caribbean trade factor. We’ve also discussed how the Turbyfield family which Benjamin married into was likely the same as the Turberville family with possible connections to Constantine John Phipps of England, and with more connections to the Caribbean.
