The Phipps and Carothers Families, Early Craven Co., NC

Previous posts have noted various records connecting the Phipps/Fipps and Carothers/Carruthers families of the area of Craven and Beaufort Counties in North Carolina. One of the documents refers to a certain Joseph Phipps and his wife Ann; other records pertain to Nathaniel and Sophia Phipps. Phipps and Carruthers associations are interwoven throughout.

STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA, Craven County.
KNOW all men by these presents, that we Sophia Phipps, John Tillman & Levi Ball are held and firmly bound unto Joseph Leak – Esq. Chairman of the Court of pleas and quarter-sessions, of the county aforesaid, in the sum of One thousand pounds – current money; to be paid to said Chairman, his successors or assigns. To the which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents; sealed with our seals, and dated this 15 day of June A. D. 1803

THE condition of the above obligation is such, that if the above bounden Sophia Phipps with the will annexed Administratrix of all and singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits of Nathanl. Phipps – deceased, do make, or cause to be made, a true & perfect inventory of all & singular the goods and chattles, rights & credits of the deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, knowledge or possession of the said Sophia Phipps or into the hands or possession of any person or persons, for her and the same so made, do exhibit or cause to be exhibited, to the court of the county aforesaid, within ninety days from the date of these presents; and the same goods, chattels and credits, & all the other goods, chattels, and credits of the deceased, [at?] the time of his death, which at any time hereafter shall come into the hands or possession of the said Sophia Phipps or into the hands or possession of any person or persons, for her do well and truly administer according to law, and further do make or cause to be made a true & just account of her said administration within two years after the date of these presents, and all the rest and residue of the said goods, chattels & credits which shall be found remaining upon the said administratrix’s account, the same being first examined and allowed by the court of said county, shall deliver and pay unto such person or persons, respectively, to which the same shall be due, pursuant to the true intent and meaning of the act in that case made and provided; then this obligation to be void and of no effect, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
