Lewis Phipps: An 1812 Georgia Marriage License

The following marriage license is a loose (unbound) document found in a “marriage box” covering 1809-1812 in Elbert County, Georgia:

GEORGIA,
Elbert County

THESE are to authorize and permit you to join in the Honorable State of MATRIMONY Lewis Phipps of the one part, and Miss Patcy Faulkner of the other part, according to the rites of your Church, provided there be no lawful cause to obstruct the same, and this shall be your authority for so doing. Given under my hand as Clerk of the Court of Ordinary of the County aforesaid, this 22nd of Decr. 1812
A Pope C. C. O. [i.e. Clerk of Court of Ordinary]

To any Minister of the Gospel, Judge, Justice of the Inferior Court, or Justice of the Peace to celebrate.

I DO hereby certify that Lewis Phipps and Patcey Faulkner were joined together in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony by me on the [?] 22nd day of Decr. 1812
