Whipps Can Equal Phipps

Yesterday’s post about Whipps Cross makes it clear that we might need to be on the lookout for Phips, Fips, Phipps, etc. records using the Whips, Wips, Whipps, etc. spelling, as crazy as that may seem. That’s because of the local dialect used in the county of Essex which did not distinguish between Phipps and Whipps.

A few quick rudimentary searches suggest that this might be justified. Various individuals named “Whipps” and the like show up in British records, especially in and around the county of Essex, and especially in the 19th century. Some appear earlier however, and some in America. They appear to have been especially settled in Maryland early, at least by 1680.

A number of Whipps or Wips individuals appear in unconfirmed records in the following locations:

  • Anne Arundel Co., MD: 1736, 1758, 1761, 1779, 1780, 1781, 1783, 1784, 1786, 1789, 1790, 1791, 1792, 1793, 1796, 1798, 1799, 1812, 1818, 1820
  • Baltimore, MD: 1711, 1713, 1719, 1721, 1723, 1726, 1746, 1747, 1751, 1753, 1754, 1758, 1779, 1785, 1787, 1807, 1823, 1826
  • Calvert Co., MD: 1680, 1687
  • Essex Co., England: 1770, 1789, 1791, 1792, 1797, 1806, 1818, 1819, 1825, 1827, 1830, 1832
  • Hagerstown, MD: 1805
  • Jefferson Co., KY: 1808, 1809, 1816, 1818, 1820, 1822
  • MD: 1811, 1821, 1823, 1827
  • OH: 1831
  • PA: 1784
  • Perry Co., OH: 1814, 1817, 1818, 1824, 1825, 1827, 1830, 1832, 1833
  • Prince George’s Co., MD: 1821
  • Yorkshire, England: 1687
  • Not specified, 1606, 1650, 1677, 1785
