An original old “Book of Negroes” an be viewed in digital form in the Black Loyalist website. These were individuals who had been inspected on various ships prior to their departure from the port of New York. The date was 31 July 1783.
Included are three listings for blacks who were “formerly the property of Matthew Phips of Norfolk, Virginia.” All three were referred to as “stout.”
One would think that this Matthew “Phips” can probably be assumed to have been the same individual elsewhere referred to as “Phripp” and as “Phipp.”
