Early Cambridgeshire Marriage

An early marriage in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in England was published in The Northern Genealogist for 1895. edited by A. Gibbons (York, England: John Sampson, 1895):

Hy. Stewkin, of Long Stanton, and Johan Phips, of same, widow.

They married in 1588.

“Hy.” was an abbreviation for Henry. The name Johan as used here was a female name and should not be confused with the male name Johan or Johann, pronounced in German like yo-hahn.

The town that they came from would today be rendered as Longstanton. This is a village in South Cambridgeshire, located six miles from the city centre of Cambridge.
